Human rights and why they matter

The British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) has produced a very interesting talking heads  film on human rights and why they matter. The video asks participants in the BIHR’s  annual conference, held on 28 January 2009, why human rights are important and how ‘the face’ of human rights can be changed. There’s some interesting comments three and a half minutes in by Andrew Dismore MP, the chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. He thinks that broadening our understanding of human rights in this country to include economic and social rights could help make human rights more popular. His point is very similar to that made by Professor Geraldine van Bueren in a recent piece for the Guardian’s libery central. Both Mr Dismore and Prof van Bueren are speaking at the BIHR panel at the Convention on Are rights universal?
